Let me tell you a little bit about Serenity Sheep. I live on 40 acres north of Belgrade, Montana, that was once part of my husband's grandfather's original 160 acre homestead. We've been the fortunate caretakers of the land for 22 years now.
I started raising sheep 11 years ago. I've had sheep as long as I've been a partner in Country Pickins. My two original old ewes were born on my birthday at a friend's farm and I got to name them. They are half Shetland and half Romney. Once they were old enough, I couldn't bear to see them go off to market, so home they came and it's been "downhill" from there! Fifty some sheep later, here we are.
I also have a llama, a pony, a goose, a bunny and several chickens. Three doe goats were added in the summer of '06 and they each had twins in the spring of this year. My goat population tripled in 2 days! We currently have 4 dogs and 4 cats. The cat numbers fluctuate depending on how many drop offs there are. I can't believe people still dump animals, but they do! Most of the animals here have been rescued in one way or another! I like to refer to my sheep operation as "a hobby run amuck". Scroll down for more pictures!
We shear the ewes in March to prepare them for giving birth. Their lambs are then shorn in the fall. All of the fall fleeces are first-shearing lamb fleeces. They have all been skirted and only have a little VM. I get many positive comments on how clean my fleeces are, even from the mill I take
I have roving, batts and I know I have my own Serenity Sheep Yard available for those of you don't enjoy the whole process.
Lamb
If you love lamb, I have that available too. I practice sustainable farming with no chemicals. They are raised on a rotated pasture all summer and fed alfalfa from our own land in the winter. Shetland is mild and delicious. They are also a small breed, so they are the perfect size for one or two people. At 8 months of age, they will dress out to 25 or 30 pounds of meat for your freezer. You can pre-order for fall lambs at any time. Sorry, I cannot ship out of state.
I accept paypal, money orders & personal checks. Please feel free to email me at knefla@aol.com with any questions or for shipping quotes.
Gallatin Valley Botanical & Hereford Hogs
With farm land rapidly disappearing in the Gallatin Valley, our past heritage of being an agricultural valley is gone. MSU was started as an agricultural university and we have some of the richest farm land around. Unfortunately, the farm land is being cut up and they are now growing houses on it. We are very proud of the fact that my husband's father and grandfather farmed this land with horses. They paid for this land with blood, sweat and tears. In that spirit, we share 5 acres of our land with Matt & Jacy Rothschiller from Gallatin Valley Botanical. They produce lovely herbs and vegetables, many that I never dreamed would grow in Montana. In addition to that, Hereford Hogs were added this year to utilize a plot of alfalfa as well as the garden scraps and surplus. These will truly be gourmet hogs. They are eating things like beet greens, fennel and baby carrots. They are very happy pigs!
